Instant Favourites #8 - “Finding the Light”

The right light can turn a good image into a great one. In fact, “photography” translates as “light drawing”, so light is an essential ingredient in any good photograph. It lends atmosphere, emotion, mood and focus. You can’t do without it. In documentary photography, and weddings in particular, it is unfortunate that this important component of any image is one of the hardest to control. Whilst in portraiture or editorial wedding coverage, you can completely control light, in documentary style, you must learn to work with and get the best out of any ambient light. One of the most challenging of these environments is bridal prep. For me, this is one of my favourite parts of the day, but the space may be confined, and natural and artificial light sources compete. So, it’s all about understanding how to  use take advantage of this light and position yourself to capture the best and most meaningful images. I manage.
